WSFA-TV is owned by Gray Television as part of a duopoly with Selma-licensed CBS affiliate WCFT-TV (channel 33). The two stations share studios at 446 Coliseum Boulevard in east Montgomery, with WSFA-TV's transmitter located off Sellers Road in unincorporated south-central Montgomery County.
WSFA-TV first signed on the air on September 1, 1954, as WSFA-TV, an NBC affiliate owned by WSFA Inc., a company founded by Gordon Persons, a former governor of Alabama. It is the oldest continuously operating television station in Alabama. The station's original studios were located on Dexter Avenue in downtown Montgomery. In 1958, WSFA-TV moved its operations to a new building on South Court Street. In 1965, the station was sold to Cosmos Broadcasting Corporation, owned by the Newhouse family of New York City.
In 1977, WSFA-TV moved its operations to its current location on Coliseum Boulevard. In 1986, the station was sold to Gray Communications of Albany, Georgia. In 1997, Gray Communications merged with the Park Broadcasting Company of Ithaca, New York, to form Gray Television.
